Teaching has been very challenging lately, so I've avoided writing about it here for a long time. Last week one of the students accidentally broke my Scentsy warmer which was a gift from another teacher. Even though it was an accident, it really made me sad because it could have been easily avoided if the kids had followed directions and the person responsible did not come forward right away to apologize for it. Anyhow, the whole thing shattered on the floor and I was very upset about the whole incident. One of the kids (not the person who broke it) surprised me today with a new candle warmer and this card. It brought me to tears because lately I've just felt discouraged, and this was such a touching act of kindness by one of the kids.

What a kind and thoughtful gesture from your student. Thank you for sharing this story. It made me smile.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet and is a good reminder of the heart of most kids. I haven't commented in a few months because I'm not teaching now. We moved last summer and I'm just hanging out at home. My job was very similar to yours..I was the special education teacher coteaching in the classroom. Anyway, I want to send you a little encouragement. Teaching really is so the best job ever but so much harder than anyone could ever fathom if they haven't done it. Sometimes it just feels like the weight of the world on your shoulders because you care so much. Take a little break this weekend if you can. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, that is precious. Those little things are what make the unbearable moments of teaching bearable. Keep that note in your desk to pull out on those bad days to remind you that it's not ALL bad! Sending positive thoughts your way that everything starts looking up soon! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness - how incredibly moving and sweet!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I teach high school and they are too, but in way different way than the little ones! Love that -- thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet. There are good people in this world.
ReplyDeleteYes,very sweet child--empathy is a great quality that is not valued and taught very much anymore IMO.
ReplyDeleteTeaching is so hard yet so rewarding. As in any job there are ups and downs. My first year teaching the sub broke my special teacher mug that was a gift from my childhood friend who is also a teacher. She did not even write a note of apology or even tell me about it. My class had to tell me about when I returned! It still bothers me from time to time as I wish I still had it. It wasn't the mug itself but the thought of the person who gave it to me and why that made it so special.
Take it easy and hope you have a nice weekend.
what amazing students you have! that story really touched me. hopefully it ended your week on a high note. you look fantastic!
ReplyDeleteOh this also brought tears to me. What a wonderful student and you can tell the parents are lovely too.
ReplyDeleteHang in there. You are touching so many lives in an important way.
Thank you everyone for your very sweet comments! I emailed his mom, and she told me that this was completely his idea, and she was touched as well by his empathy. I wrote him a thank you card and I told him that this was the nicest gesture I have ever had from a student. :)
